Northwood enjoy a hard-fought victory

2014-03-18 00:00

NORTHWOOD produced the goods in stifling heat to beat Kearsney 2-1 at Botha’s Hill on Saturday, reaffirming its status as a strong hockey school.

Neither team gathered much momentum and those watching were given a match of two contrasting halves, with Kearsney in particular coming under continuous pressure from a determined and gritty Northwood outfit.

Cody van Breemen broke the shackles in the first half, scoring first for Northwood and giving his side a 1-0 advantage when the teams changed ends. The lead was doubled early in the second half when Northwood made the most of a Kearsney defensive error and were awarded a short corner for their efforts. This was calmly converted by Joshua Cowell but Kearsney refused to lie down, converting their own short corner, courtesy of Matthew Butler, to set up a frenetic final 10 minutes.

Despite dominating, Kearsney could not find a way through Northwood’s solid defence and the Durban North lads held on for the win.

For Kearsney, it was reflection on what could have been and all the work to do ahead of this weekend’s meeting against Westville.

Hillcrest High School girls’ and boys’ first hockey teams were involved in the Eshowe Festival at the weekend. It was not a weekend for the faint-hearted — the girls played nine shortened games and the boys seven.

Both teams acquitted themselves well, with the girls coming third overall and the boys achieving the same result, despite losing only one match.
