Not supercool: SA video gets torrent of abuse

2012-11-17 00:00

A PRETORIA singer has become something of an overnight YouTube sensation, but not in a good way.

Dirk van der Westhuizen posted a video of his track Supercool on Wednesday afternoon, and by yesterday had attracted 40 000 hits — and a torrent of abuse.

Van der Westhuizen (22), who said he’s been writing tunes since he was 12 and has released two albums, said he was astonished.

“It was originally a fun thing,” he told sister paper Beeld. “I think some people looked at it because they hate me without having heard my music.”

Many of the comments accuse him of making Afrikaans a laughing stock.

In the video, he sings bits of the monster online sensation Gangnam Style by Korean PSY, and tries a few of the goofy dance moves that have swept the globe.

More than 700 million people have watched Gangnam Style on YouTube.

Pierre van der Westhuizen (no relation), of record company Maroela Musiek, said they decided to put in the Gangnam Style bits because it “went so well with Supercool”.

And Dirk? Even though some people think he should jump off a roof, he’s not finished.

“At least my name is on everyone’s lips,” he said yesterday.
