Notties: bonny crowd for Highland games

2009-05-18 00:00

YOU didn’t have to be Scottish to enjoy Bell’s Fort Nottingham Highland and Traditional Games at Fort Nottingham, which drew the crowds as well as competitors on Saturday.

The SA National Defence Force sent 10 regiments to participate alongside four local farmers’ teams and the eLan Rugby Legends in the traditional events that included tossing the caber (45kg), carrying the weight (72kg), shot put (26kg) and tug o’ war and a kilted mile — a race up a steep hill. Several KwaZulu-Natal pipe bands provided a customary skirl of the bagpipes while taking part in the Dunsmore Challenge. There was also non-Scottish gumboot dancing as well a vintage tractor and Bentley display.
