Novel way to teach youngsters about life’s challenges

2010-08-11 00:00

THEMBA Dlamuka has a deep concern for South Africa’s young people. As the principal of Siphoso High School in Eshowe, he is fully aware of the risks and challenges they face. As a way of helping them to understand and cope with life in the modern world, he was written a book, Playing with Love in the Lion’s Cage.

The story is in the form of an English language dialogue, ideal for classroom use, where youngsters can take on the roles and see the situations played out in front of them. The main characters are Zakes and Rose, two adolescents. He wants to be her boyfriend; she comes to like him, but she is the more mature of the pair and is aware of the dangers of a casual relationship.

Dlamuka’s characters talk their way through challenges including HIV and Aids, how to go for blood tests, poverty, the tragedies of teenage pregnancy and prostitution.

At the end of the book, having listened to advice and talked through their problems, Zakes and Rose commit to each other. It is a story that will resonate with teenagers all over the country.

Pupils at Siphoso High have already acted out some of the scenes in the book in front of visiting pupils, and Dlamuka is keen to see more schools using his book as a resource in the important area of life skills. • Playing with Love in the Lion’s Cage is available from Adams Bookshops and at bookshops in Stanger and Empangeni.

It is also available from Themba Dlamuka at or 082 515 8921.
