2012-09-18 00:00

A 28-YEAR-OLD man was arrested on Sunday for rape and murder in Nqutu.

The man, who was with an accomplice, is alleged to have robbed and raped a woman (27) who was with her boyfriend on Saturday evening, said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

He said the two criminals confronted the couple and demanded cash and cellphones.

They then raped the woman at gunpoint and fired at her boyfriend, who was not injured.

“At about 10 pm, the same suspects went to a nearby house where they fatally shot a 28-year-old male,” Mdunge said, adding that the motive was unknown.

The suspect was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and found with an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“Police also recovered a cellphone taken from the rape victim.”

The suspect is expected to appear in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court today.

Police said the arrest of the second suspect is “imminent”.
