Nudist beach launch waits on decision by Ezemvelo

2015-01-30 00:00

WHILE the community waits to hear the outcome of the “pending application” of a nudist beach in Mpenjati, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s spokesperson Musa Mntambo said the organisation has not received an application from the Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM).

The municipality will have to send an application to Ezemvelo — an entity of the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DEDTEA) — before the beach can open officially.

“At this stage, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife does not have an opinion on this matter and have repeatedly asked HCM and the KZN Naturists Association to provide us with an application detailing their intentions.

“We have not been furnished with this documentation. I am aware of various resolutions and discussions taken but this has been primarily through the media,” said Mntambo.

He said the HCM has scheduled a meeting with DEDTEA and Ezemvelo to brief stakeholders on the application. “Naturally we will, as we do with all applications, approach it with an open mind.”

Bheko Madlala, DEDTEA spokesperson, reiterated the comment from Mntambo.

However, at a recent media briefing in council chambers HCM spokesperson Simon April told media that the application was sent to Ezemvelo and is “still pending”.

“We did not apply to Ezemvelo to approve of the beach. We applied for excess land should there be infrastructure that is necessary to construct,” he said.

He added that once the municipality receives a letter detailing the objections towards the nudist beach from faith-based organisations, council will decide whether they would like to meet again and reconsider their decision.

The faith-based organisations and community members who are also against the nudist beach have held several meetings from late last year.

April earlier indicated they wanted the nudist beach to be officially opened over Easter.

He said the non-availability of a budget to improve on the beach is part of the ongoing discussions.
