Nuggety Sehloho beats the heat for Bluff victory

2009-11-10 00:00

DESPITE the hot and humid conditions, Peter Sehloho continued his build-up towards a marathon in the Middle East in December, winning the Bluff Meats Veteran Half-marathon in one hour 18 minutes 19 seconds.

With the temperature soaring to over 20 degrees and 80% humidity, the nuggety Boxer athlete was able to open fully a kilometre over club-mate Garth Robson, who finished the 21 km in 1hr 01 min 54sec.

Stella’s Welcome Mhlongo was over 2 km adrift for a distant third.

The Bluff Athletic Club event is one race in the year where the older runners take centre stage, with all age groups gaining recognition over the senior athletes. In the 50 to 59 category, Jeremiah Ngwenya took the honours in 1:27,43, well clear of Phineas Ntombela of KZN striders, four minutes off the pace.

Not surprisingly Ngwenya’s time contributed to the Boxer club winning the men’s team prize.

Yellowwood Park’s Jenny Sutton led the women home in 1:39,11, with Janette Davidson from Durban Old Boys the nearest competitor in the 40 to 49 age group, and Debbie de Koning the victor in the 50 to 59 category.

De Koning and Jane Baker from Durban Athletic Club had one of the most competitive struggles of the day in the women’s 50 to 59 category. The Escom Gijimas athlete was only able to secure her victory in the final kilometres of the race, with Baker finishing only 100 m behind De Koning as they flew into King’s Park.

Although the best placing of a Westville runner was Gill Tregenna in third place in the women’s 60-plus age group behind Lien Botha and Alette Engelbrecht, the club secured the team prize.
