Nuns lauded for sterling contribution

2014-10-16 00:00

AN order of nuns who braved the unknown over a century ago to improve the lives of South Africans were honoured in Durban yesterday.

The Holy Family Sisters arrived in the country exactly 150 years ago, and dedicated themselves to caring for the sick and elderly and working at churches nationwide.

Yesterday visitors from all over the country congregated at the Emmanuel Cathedral to honour the current and past nuns, and to thank them for their service to the country.

In 1864, six French nuns set sail for South Africa in a bid to establish schools, hospitals and clinics in a new country. They also become involved in many other forms of ministry.

Speaker Mary-Ann Arnold said the parish was eternally grateful to the sisters for everything they had done.
