Obituary: ‘Gogo’ with a healthy message

2008-04-29 00:00

Edendale community worker and The Witness’s "Gogo" Gladys Ndwandwa past away recently after a short illness.

Ndwandwa died at the age of 68 last Thursday. She was born on December 16, 1940, in the Edendale area, where she grew up and later studied.

Witness readers will remember Ndwandwa’s column, "Gogo’s Kitchen" where she gave tips and traditional recipes. She wrote a series of articles for The Witness sharing a lifetime’s advice on health and home issues that were handed down to her from her grandmother.

In her articles she shared with readers the healing properties of traditional herbs used for treating various diseases and illnesses, and passed on the healthy recipes she inherited from her grandmother.

Ndwandwa worked for the community, serving the weak all her life. She worked as a nurse at Fort Napier hospital for the mentally ill until she retired in 1993.

Her passion for nursing and caring for those who could not care for themselves prompted her to offer voluntary service to Padca, where she cared for the aged.

She also opened a soup kitchen in 1993 at the Seventh Day Adventist church in Edendale.

At her house in Dambuza, Ndwandwe started a community project enrolling local women in farming and gardening projects.

Ndwandwa’s funeral will be held on Friday at the Seventh Day Adventist church in Edendale.
