Obituary: Rugby stalwart Kobus Koorts dies

2008-04-16 00:00

One of KwaZulu-Natal and Durban Collegians rugby’s favourite sons, Jacobus Abraham Koorts, affectionately known as Kobus in his days as one of the country’s smallest but most dynamic Currie Cup wings, died in Klerksdorp this week after a long battle with cancer, writes JOS ROBSON.

Koorts was 64.

Born in 1944, Kobus Koorts played 24 games for Natal between 1964 and 68 and played alongside famous Springbok names like Keith Oxlee, Tommy Bedford, Hannes Viljoen, Trix Truter and former president of the KZNRU Keith Parkinson, to name but a few.

After his playing days, he moved to Carltonville where he met his wife Johanna and had three children, Kobus junior, Corné and daughter Alida. He later moved to Rustenburg, where he owned sports and shoe shops, before moving to his farm near Ventersdorp in 1988.

Kobus Koorts will long be remembered as the diminutive wing with the king-size heart, who became known as one of the finest finishers in the game. He will be buried on his farm on Friday.
