Three new films open in Pietermaritzburg this week — The Kite Runner, Sidney White and the Seven Dorks and Bheema (CineCentre) while extra prints turn up of Meet the Spartans (Ster-Kinekor), Cloverfield (Nu Metro) and Sunday (CineCentre).

The Kite Runner is based on the hugely successful novel by Khaled Hosseini. Set in Afghanistan, it features two childhood friends Amir and Hassan, one from a rich family, the other from a poor one. Amir betrays his friend and when the Russians invade, he and his family go into exile in the U.S. Then come the Taliban. But Amir is torn from his comfortable life in the U.S. when he gets a message from Kabul and he returns to find his friend. Directed by Marc Foster (Finding Neverland) the film stars Shaun Toub, Khalid Abdalla, Nasser Memarzia and Said Taghmaoui.

Sydney White and the Seven Dorks is a modern retelling of the classic fairy tale Snow White, done in the American Pie tradition of teen comedy. Snow White is a beautiful college freshman (played by Amanda Bynes) who joins her late mother’s once dignified sorority, Kappa. But things aren’t what they used to be and Rachel Witchburn (Sara Paxton) is determined to humiliate her. Meanwhile White befriends seven nerds down the street and they become allies against the forces of convention.

Bheema is a tale of love and redemption set in the gangster world of Chennai. ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram stars as Bheema who joins a gang and becomes a force to be reckoned with. But when love calls, he tries to get out of his life of crime and finds it’s not that easy. Stars Trisha Krishnan, Raghuvaran, Prakash Raj and Sherin.
