Off Road: Dakar is coming to town

THE Richmond Timber Track 400 off-road motor race will be staged in the KwaZul-Natal Midlands on Friday and Saturday.

The time trials start from Richmond Country Club at 2.30 pm on Friday, with the main race staged from the same venue from 8.30 am to 5 pm on the following day.

This is the third round of eight of the South African Off Road Racing Championship for motor vehicle (not bikes and quads) and is being held concurrently with the third round of the KZN Championship.

This national series event will attract some 80 competitors from all over the country to compete in a Dakar-style display. Two Toyotas that took part in the Dakar Rally are taking part.

On Friday the trials cover 50 kilometres, with the main event on Saturday over 350 km in a two or three-lap format.

Five television crews will be present, as will a medical team in a following helicopter.

Entry to the event is free and there will be numerous vantage points for spectators on the route.

Some 850 officials will be involved in organsing the evnt and a crowd of between 5 000 to 8 000 spectators is expected.
