Off-duty cop shot and arrested after being found in stolen car

2015-01-19 00:00

THE last thing members of a Durban vehicle tracking company expected to find behind the wheel of a stolen car was an armed police officer.

On Friday last week, members of a vehicle tracking company picked up a signal of a stolen vehicle in the Jacobs area.

They tracked the vehicle from Jacobs until they found the vehicle in the Verulam area. They pulled it over and confronted the driver of the stolen vehicle. It is alleged that the suspect pointed his firearm at the tracking company employees, who opened fire on him.

The suspect was shot twice in the shoulder.

It was later discovered that the suspect was an off-duty constable from the Inanda Tactical Response Team.

The 41-year-old suspect was arrested by members of the SAPS and is currently under police guard in a Durban hospital.

His state firearm has also been seized as well as the Toyota Hilux that he was driving.

He will be charged with attempted murder, pointing of a firearm as well as possession of property suspected to be stolen.
