A POLICE officer was critically injured when his Nissan Almera collided head-on with a grader on the Edendale road at about 1 pm yesterday.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the Almera had four occupants and an eight-year-old baby on board.

The baby was unharmed, while the driver suffered critical injuries.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said paramedics arrived on the scene to find the driver and passenger outside the vehicle.

Both were treated for possible neck and back injuries.

Banks said the driver had suffered a possible fractured arm.

They were taken to Pietermaritzburg Medi-Clinic for further medical treatment.

Captain Zwane said reckless and negligent driving will be investigated.

In Cato Ridge, near George Dale Road, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run yesterday afternoon.

Banks said it is not clear where the man, in his late 50s, was coming from or going to. It is thought that he was hit by a bakkie and suffered serious injuries. He was declared dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, in Boom Street in town, another pedestrian was struck by a light motor vehicle while he was crossing the road yesterday evening. He also suffered serious injuries and was taken to Northdale Hospital.

In a three car pile-up, one taxi passenger suffered chest injuries and two escaped with minor injuries when the taxi collided with two other vehicles on the R56 Richmond road. The injured were taken to Edendale Hospital.
