ORIBI Village residents in Pietermaritzburg are shocked after a policeman gunned down his girlfriend before killing himself with his service pistol.

Constable Sibusiso Hlophe (29), who works at Rietvlei police station, shot Nonhlanhla Zakwe (28) three times in the face at about 2 am on Sunday at their Artemis Road home. Their bodies were found three days later.

Hlophe shot himself once in the head, said a police source.

A neighbour told the police that she had heard the screams, but did not pay attention.

She only ventured to their house on Tuesday, when she found the bodies.

She told police she was shocked when she looked through the window and saw a woman’s body lying in a pool of blood on the bed with three gunshot wounds to the face. Hlophe was lying on the floor.

She could not be reached for further comment.

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she was afraid after hearing the gunshots.

They said cartridges and an unused bullet were found in the house. The neighbours then alerted the police.

Police spokesperson Jay Naicker confirmed that the bodies were found with gunshot wounds. “The policeman was found with gunshot wounds and a gun lying next to him. He was shot in the head,” he said.

Naicker said the motive for the murder/suicide is unknown and Alexandra Road police are investigating a case of murder and an inquest in respect of the dead policeman.
