Ohrtmann lights trap motorists on N3

2013-03-04 00:00

A POORLY synchronised robot on the Ohrtmann Road offramp has caused traffic chaos on the busy road leading to the Willowton industrial area for the past 10 days.

There have been at least three accidents in this time, the last on Friday morning.

Workers in the area have complained about running the gauntlet to get to work.

It seems the timing of the robot was recently changed with the robot showing green for about 40 seconds, allowing only about two to three vehicles at a time to come off the ramp. In the meantime vehicles were backed up onto the N3 with drivers waiting in dread that they could be wiped out by the fast flowing traffic on the highway. In addition impatient drivers have been jumping the red robot, crossing from the wrong lane and going across then making a U-turn to join the traffic.

Several Witness staffers were affected and complaints also came from Interpak and other businesses both in Willowton and Ohrtmann Roads.

By midday on Friday, staff from the Msunduzi Municipality’s electricity department were fixing the robots and commuters will know today (Monday) whether the situation has improved.

Workers in the area have also appealed to the municipality to consider having a pointsman between 4 pm and 5.30 pm where Willowton Road joins Ohrtmann Road. This is when staff going home after work battle to get onto Ohrtmann Road to get onto the N3 or go into town.

Msunduzi Municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said they were aware of the problem and were working on it.
