Oldest new attorney admitted

2008-11-16 00:00

It was an emotional moment for Durban man Kamathaven Govindasamy Reddy (60), who became the oldest person to be admitted as an attorney for the first time, in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday.

The Witness tried to contact Reddy for his comments, but was unsuccessful.

Reddy has worked in the legal profession, mainly as a paralegal, for 31 years. He began his articles of clerkship in November 1974, but did not complete them at first.

He served two years and nine months of articles at the time with the firm Navanethem Pillay in Durban. That period was recognised and accepted as valid by the high court on the recommendation of the KZN Law Society.

Several members of the legal profession recommended Reddy as being a “fit and proper person” to be admitted as an attorney, including his former principal, Navanethem Pillay, who is a now a Judge of the International Criminal Court at The Hague.

Reddy obtained his LLB degree through the University of South Africa in June this year.

Admitting Reddy as an attorney, Judge Nic van der Reyden with Judge Jerome Mnguni said it was a “great honour” to admit him to the profession after so many years.

He said Reddy has shown great perseverance and said his was a great achievement.

“This message comes from the other judges of this division too,” he added.
