Olly registered doctors to head up top state hospitals

2012-02-28 00:00

THE executive heads of the country’s most specialised state hospitals, including the Inkosi Albert Luthuli and King Edward VII hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal, must in future be registered medical doctors or dentists.

They must have a postgraduate qualification in public health or management, as well as at least 10 years’ managerial experience in the public sector.

For this they will get paid more than R1 million per year.

This emerges from advertisements for managerial posts for “central” state hospitals, which the department of health advertised the past weekend.

In terms of new legislation, central hospitals will be South Africa’s top state hospitals where patients can receive highly specialised care like organ transplants.

They will also be training hospitals linked to medical schools and do research.

The new legislation regulates the job requirements for executive heads and will no longer be decided by provinces.

Health Department spokesperson Fidel Hadebe said the department advertised posts in 51 district, 19 regional, 14 tertiary and eight specialised hospitals.
