Olympian Khotso Mokoena jumps over Croc-infested creek

2013-05-02 00:00

OLYMPIC silver medallist Khotso Mokoena yesterday realised a long standing dream by jumping over a creek full of big crocodiles.

The long jumper made his leap at Crocodile Creek in Tongaat, home to over 5 000 Nile Crocodiles.

Mokoena’s obsession with all things crocodilian stems from his heritage. Mokoena translates to he/she who swears by a crocodile in Sesotho and the animal is the collective identity for the clan.

The athlete also has several crocodile tattoos, including the words “Crocodile Bites”.

Owner of Crocodile Creek and crocodile expert, Peter Watson, advised Mokoena that crocodiles could themselves jump up to four metres out of the water, and that he better jump as far and as high as he could.

To make the jump, Khotso took time out from his stringent training regime for the Diamond League appearances, the first of which is in Shanghai on May 18.
