Omens not good for KZN Midlands hockey

2008-04-22 00:00

The Interprovincial Invitation Tournament held at Queensmead in Durban over the weekend did not produce encouraging results for the KZN Midlands men’s and women’s hockey teams.

In contrast, the KZN Coastal men’s and women’s A teams, both known as the Raiders, enjoyed excellent results, as did Northerns (Northern Gauteng).

The Raiders women overturned an earlier 3-2 defeat to Northerns in the league phase to win the final by a comprehensive 3-0 margin over the same opponents. The Raiders men, who beat Northerns 3-1 in the initial phase, drew the final 1-1 with the same team.

Granted, none of the teams were at full strength due to SA players at senior and U21 level being unavailable owing to their national commitments, but the weekend did give coaches and players a reasonable guide as to where they are in their preparation for the upcoming interprovincial tournaments.

Further, relying heavily on senior national players to produce the goods at IPT is not sound thinking, as Resolution SA men’s coach Gregg Clark, for one, is to severely limit their participation with the bigger picture (Beijing Olympic Games) in mind. Spar SA women’s coach Jenny King might well do the same. The SA U21 men’s and women’s squads are taking part in the respective IPTs in their own right, so they also cannot be counted on.

And with the Men’s IPT in Potchefstroom and the Spar Women’s IPT in Durban only 11 and 18 days away respectively, there is precious little time for KZN Midlands to get things right.

Otherwise, dreaded relegation to the B Section is a real possibility.
