On a mission to inspire women

Accomplished Pietermaritzburg businesswoman and mother Ingrid Roberts is on a mission to expose the women of this city to everything that is right in the world.

Just how will she do this you might ask? The answer is through her “Insight and Inspirations” talk shows.

The third instalment of Roberts’s talk shows at the Liberty Midlands Mall was booked to capacity as women came to celebrate Mothers’ Day with her on Saturday night. Hlubi Mboya, the darling of South African television, was the drawcard.

Roberts said that besides meetings on grounds of business, she finds there is little interaction among women in the city, where women and women’s issues are the common denominator.

“I found that as a woman in my 40s I was looking for a variety of options. We are the capital city and the City of Choice, but we are not well represented in terms of motivation. I would complain about having to travel to Durban and Johannesburg to see visiting speakers. And when my husband said, ‘Well, why you don’t you do something about it?’, I started formulating this idea of a talk show,” said a bubbly Roberts.

The idea led to her very first talk show in August last year and as they say, the rest is history.

Roberts said the show is divided into three main segments, which are accompanied by lively entertainment and lots of giveaways.

In the first segment, Roberts features “sheroes”, local women and their inspirational stories.

Another important feature in the show is charity work. Roberts makes people aware of the work done and zooms in on the women behind it all.

This year her charity of choice was Esther House, a shelter in Pietermaritzburg for abused and vulnerable women and their children.

And finally she appeases her guests’ intrigue with celebrities by featuring household names like Hlubi Moya, as she believes in the person behind the personality.

“We were fully booked by Tuesday. It’s been a long dream and I’m so proud to have received such a following. The vibe was unbelievable. At least 100 women stood in a queue to thank me for bringing this out.

“It is about having women affirmed, enabled and inspired and I think that is what we did. I’m excited to have The Witness behind it.”

Roberts has another talk show planned for Women’s Month in August. But she remains tight-lipped about her next drawcard.
