AN Estcourt woman made KwaZulu-Natal proud when she was named runner-up in the annual 2010 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Crown at the sizzling grand finale held in Sun City’s Valley of Waves on Saturday.
Alice Dunn, a meat market manager at Shoprite Estcourt, was participating in the 18-year-old competition for the second time.
She entered last year, but did not get anywhere.
“I feel okay, but I was hoping to get the first prize this year because I had prepared myself very well; however, I am looking forward to next year’s competition,” said a confident Dunn.
She said she has been working for Shoprite Checkers for the past 20 years. She won a R10 000 holiday voucher from All Gold, a R5 000 cash prize from Coca Cola and R1 500 worth of Simba vouchers.
The first-prize winner was 13-year-old Jaco Labuschagne, who hails from Boksburg, Gauteng, and whose prizes included a Toyota Hilux 2.7 doublecab, raised-body Raider.
Third place went to Jasper Johannes Gordon, who lives in Strand in the Western Cape and is meat market manager at Checkers Somerset West.
