On the run: one escapee killed, one back in jail

2010-03-08 00:00

ONE of the eight escapees who broke out of the Westville Prison three weeks ago has been killed in a shoot-out with police, just a day after the police pounced on one of his comrades at his hideout in uMlazi section N on Friday.

Police said Nonhlanhla Lucky Mhlongo opened fire on Durban organised crime unit officers, who found him at a homestead in the Groutville area in the early hours of Saturday morning. The police returned fire, killing Mhlongo.

Mhlongo had been arrested for his involvement with ATM bombings and murder.

Simon Bouque, who was caught on Friday, pleaded guilty that day to escaping and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. He was moved to the Kokstad maximum security prison.

In other crime incidents, two muggers were shot dead by their victim in Gillespie Street, Durban.
