One dies, two injured in three-car pile-up on Ritchie Road

2011-07-14 00:00

ONE person died and two others were injured in an accident involving three cars along Ritchie Road, Pietermaritzburg, yesterday afternoon.

The police said a white Toyota RunX being followed by a bakkie was travelling towards Alexandra Road extension, and a black VW Golf was travelling towards Oribi.

It is believed that the Golf tried to overtake a truck, sideswiping the Toyota RunX, and collided head-on with the bakkie travelling behind the RunX.

Chris Botha of Netcare 911 said one of the drivers died on scene from extensive injuries.

His passenger sustained critical injuries while the woman driver of the bakkie was seriously injured, Botha said.

A female passenger in the Toyota RunX, who was travelling with two children, escaped unharmed.

Botha said that when paramedics arrived at the scene the driver and passenger of the VW Golf were trapped in the wreckage.

The emergency services used hydraulic rescue tools to free the injured from the twisted metal and medics stabilised the critically injured man.

After the patients were extricated and stabilised, they were taken to Netcare St Anne’s Hospital.

In another accident one person was killed and three others injured when four trucks, three bakkies and a car collided on the N3 southbound at the Nottingham Road and Mooi River road exit yesterday morning.

It is believed the accident occurred in the midst of smoke from a controlled fire on the side of the N3.

One of the bakkies involved was a maintenance vehicle attending to the controlled burn.

One truck went across the centre median.

All but one lane of the northbound carriageway was closed.

One truck driver was trapped in the wreckage and died on scene.
