One killed, 11 hurt as taxi hits Roadlink bus

VENTERSBURG — In yet another accident involving the SA Roadlink bus company, a man was killed and 11 injured yesterday morning when a taxi crashed into the back of a broken down bus on the N1 highway in the Free State.

The taxi wreck was so mangled that emergency workers had to cut out most of the seats to free the injured.

Three severely injured passengers have been airlifted from Welkom to Bloemfontein’s Pelonomi hospital, while another’s condition was still too critical yesterday afternoon to be moved.

The accident happened near Ventersburg, a mere 60 km from where a woman was killed and 45 hurt when a Roadlink bus overturned five days ago.

Injured survivors of that accident were forced to wait 10 hours to be taken to their destination after the bus Roadlink sent to fetch them broke down.

The bus that broke down on Sunday was being sent empty from East London to Johannesburg where mechanics were to work on a technical fault, said Roadlink marketing manager Marna Enslin. It broke down between 5 pm and 6 pm, and stood next to the road through the night.

SA Roadlink has been in the news repeatedly after fatal accidents, including one at Liberty Mall, Pietermaritzburg, on Christmas Eve 2006 in which 12 people were killed.

Logan Maistry, spokesperson for Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele, said in response to a query yesterday that the government is not specifically investigating Roadlink, but on instruction from the minister, all bus companies are dealt with very firmly.
