One killed as bus and car collide

2014-02-17 00:00

A MOTORIST was killed in the early hours of Saturday morning when his car collided with a Greyhound bus.

According to Road and Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu it appears the driver of the car, a Volkswagen Jetta with a Pietermaritzburg registration, lost control and crossed into the path of the bus in the oncoming lane.

The Greyhound bus was travelling on the N3 southbound from Johannesburg. The car was travelling on the northbound lane towards Johannesburg.

Mngomezulu said the collision happened near the top of Town Hill. “There is quite a big barrier there so we still do not know how he jumped the barrier.”

The driver was travelling alone.

Mngomezulu said the driver of the car died at the scene. “He was extracted from the wreckage using the jaws of life, but he was already deceased. No people in the bus were injured.”

The accident, which occurred at around 4.30 am, caused traffic delays of around an hour while the road was cleared.

Srenika Royeppen, the regional terminal manager of Greyhound, said this was the first accident they had had in a long time.

She said the bus driver saw a vehicle without lights coming towards him and tried to avoid it, but was unsuccessful, leading to the collision.
