One more hurdle for Maritzburg Varsity

2008-09-11 00:00

THERE is just one fixture standing in the way of Maritzburg Varsity claiming the coveted KZN Men’s Super League club hockey title.

The modest hurdle comes in the form of bottom team Durban North seconds in Sunday’s 12.30 pm match at Queensmead in Durban. And based on second-last PMB Collegians’ 7-1 drubbing of the second stringers from the Riverside-based club in Durban North at the AB Jackson GreenFields Turf last Sunday, player/coach Darryn Gallagher’s side should be able to secure the required win with ease.

Even if Varsity somehow conspire to draw this one, all is not lost as their current five-point advantage over nearest challengers Durban Varsity will give them another chance to make sure against Pinetown in the last round on Sunday week.

Nobody, least of all PMB Varsity captain Ayden Shrives and the players, want to go that route, though, particularly after their marvellous come-from-behind victory over Durban Varsity at the ABJ last time out.

Should all go according to plan, this season’s league title will be just reward for the campus-based PMB Varsity squad and their sports officer, Reggie Smith, who has gone way beyond the call of duty in helping realise this goal.

And perhaps the Gallagher/Smith signature that will be best remembered is the manner in which Varsity’s young talent has blossomed, with the likes of Justin Domleo, Dalan Phillips and Kyle Nipper really putting their hands up and coming into their own as serious prospects for top honours.

FIXTURES (All at Queensmead):

Pinetown vs Durban North I (9.30 am); Durban Varsity vs Pmb Collegians (11 am); Dbn North II vs Pmb Varsity (12.30 pm); Kearsney vs Dbn Tech Rovers (2 pm).
