'One ride, one blanket': Harley riders rev up Umlazi

2011-06-09 00:00

HARLEY Davidson, often associated with big burly men with tattoos and beards, broke stereotypes at the weekend when 50 men and women riders, young and old, rode into the heart of rural Umlazi.

When they thundered in off the N2 from Umhlanga, heads turned as people snapped pictures of the convoy on their cellphones, creating a stir as they approached Umlazi central.

The occasion was the presentation of blankets, after a charity ride co-ordinated by rider Victor Madondo. The presentation was an outstanding success as the riders entered a school to a warm reception marked by ululation by the children and their mothers.

Madondo-Hughes Construction, Madondo’s business, and Harley Davidson conducted the “One Ride, One Blanket” initiative after hearing about the plight of the Isiphiwo Community Organisation, which takes care of about 100 families (about 700 people) affected by poverty and/or HIV and Aids.

On behalf of the Harley Davidson members, Madondo thanked the Metro Police for ensuring that the pack of riders were safe on the freeways and in remote areas.
