Open gardens: spectacular Benvie beckons

2011-09-22 00:00

SPRING has reached the garden city and along with it the annual Witness Open Gardens. The first garden, the Benvie garden in the Karkloof, opens on Saturday until 10 October, while the rest of the gardens open next weekend and throughout October.

The Benvie garden is spectacular and always a welcome addition to The Witness Open Gardens. It is well worth taking a good pair of walking shoes, a picnic basket, your bird book and binoculars as you meander through the 125-year-old, 30 hectare garden.

Trees from throughout the world are featured, and stunning hedges of rhododendrons and azalea mollis are in full bloom.

Tomorrow’s Witness will carry a supplement with a complete listing of all the gardens that will be open this spring. with directions, the dates that they are open and admission fees.

Admission fees are generally donated to charities of the gardener’s choice.

Several gardens will offer light meals or teas and plants for sale. Be sure to check the highlighted section where applicable, and be sure to get your copy of The Witness tomorrow for the full listing.
