Open gardens:head for Hilton this weekend

2011-10-15 00:00

THIS weekend, head out to Hilton and the Midlands to visit the last of the region’s open gardens — early spring rains have rejuvenated many of the gardens, with spectacular roses and shows of bulbs being reported, and azaleas in full bloom throughout the area.

The gardens are open from 9 am to 5 pm today and tomorrow and there are several highlights to be had there — some of them serve tea and others sell only plants, but all are worth visiting and spending some time in. They range from small gardens to large, rambling layouts, and while an entry fee is charged it is generally nominal and is donated to a charity of the gardeners’ choice.

Next weekend you have the chance to visit the Underberg gardens as they begin their garden festival – there are talks and demonstrations on offer and nine gardens will be open.

You also have until the end of the month to stand a chance of being a winner in the fabulous Witness/Berry’s Mowers and Pools competition. One lucky reader will win a ride-on mower valued at over R24 000 from Berry’s, which is at 3 Peter Kerchhoff Street.

Entry forms are in today’s paper or you can get one from Berry’s, but make sure you enter to stand a chance of being a winner! Other great prizes are also up for grabs.
