Opportunity for country cricketers

2008-10-23 00:00

THE spotlight falls on KZN Inland second-tier competitions when the Challenge League, South Pool, gets under way on Sunday.

It’s an opportunity for the country districts cricketers to test themselves against mostly the second teams of clubs playing in the Premier League.

Teams winning the pool matches have the chance to challenge for a place in the KZN Inland Premier League.

The pick of the fixtures sees East Griqualand and Southern Districts playing each other at Kokstad.

The friendly rivalry between these neighbours should result in an absorbing game for cricket lovers in Kokstad.

Standard II, after their loss last weekend to Varsity II, will want to bounce back when they travel to Noodsberg to take on the Midlands second stringers.

A buoyant Varsity II clash with up-and-coming side Masibemunye at Varsity Oval.

With the KZN Inland team playing Free State at the Maritzburg Oval in the SA Airways Provincial Challenge competition this weekend, the Premier League teams switch to the PMB Premier League 50-over series. The depth of some sides will be tested.

Zingari, who should not be too badly affected by Inland call-ups, clash with Varsity at Collegians Club.

Varsity, who will likely have Ross McMillan, Ollie Humphries and Garry Hampson playing for Inland, will be tested in this one.

Defending PMB 50-over champions Standard, with possibly only the Van Vuuren brothers out, could once again be too strong for Orientals, who will be missing Inland cricketers Sashen Dorasamy and Kevershan Padayachee.

Lancashire take on Young Natalians at the Michael Patricks Oval in Woodlands. Natalians are not affected by Inland call-ups, while Lancs will miss in-form Inland batsman Mbasa Gqadushe.

KZN Inland Challenge League, South Pool: East Griqualand vs Southern Districts (Kokstad);

Midlands II vs Standard II (Noodsberg); Masibemunye vs Varsity II (Varsity Oval).

PMB Premier 50: Zingari vs Varsity (Collegians Club); Standard vs Orientals (Varsity Oval II); Lancashire vs Young Natalians (Woodlands).
