Organised crime unit members redeployed

2011-12-20 00:00

MEMBERS of the Cato Manor organised crime unit accused of being a hit squad and executing suspects have been deployed to other units.

The unit was exposed by a Sunday newspaper last week. Some of its members have been accused of killing several suspects they were investigating or chasing. The allegations are being investigated by a special task team.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, provincial spokesperson for the SA Police Services Vincent Mdunge said there was a mistaken assumption that the unit had been disbanded.

He said it was only the members seen in the pictures published by the Sunday Times who had been redeployed.

The members were photographed at what was seen as a celebration after they had killed suspects; they had their guns drawn and were smiling. In another photo, they were seen laughing while a woman believed to be related to one of the dead suspects knelt crying next to them.

“At this stage there are no plans to disband the unit as there is still an investigation by a task team from the national level. Once that is done and the allegations of wrongdoing by the members have been established, only then the decision of whether or not to disband the unit will be taken.”

Mdunge said KZN Hawks boss Major-General Johan Booysen would not be suspended pending the investigation as there were no allegations of wrongdoing against him.
