Orphaned kudu calf Billy thinks he’s a dog

KIMBERLEY — Billy, an orphaned kudu bull who thinks he is a dog, is being cared for by two Arabian foster mothers.

In the evenings, full of their milk, he plays with his dog and jackal play-mates.

Just two weeks ago, the newborn Billy was found alone in the veld.

Susan Smit of Tahillah farm, who is raising the calf, said he would have been food for leopards if she had not rescued him.

“He was hungry, just skin and bone. His umbilical cord was still attached.”

She and her husband, Charl, farm Arab horses, boer goats, game and sheep in Namibia, close to the border.

She brought him home in the hope that her Arab mares that had just weaned foals would allow him to suckle.

One of them got a fright when he butted his head against her demanding to be fed, she said. But the mare soon got used to it and now he drinks from two mares.

At dusk, Billy plays with three orphaned jackal pups and the farm dogs, making a terrific racket, she said. She adopted the pups after their mothers were killed by farmers, Susan said.

At night, Billy sleeps in a bathroom.
