Oscar’s cellphone secrets locked

2013-06-25 00:00

POLICE could not access information on Oscar Pistorius’s iPhone 5 because he had forgotten the four-digit pin code to unlock the phone, the Mail on Sunday reported in London over the weekend.

The paper reported that the police had asked Apple in the U.S. to help unlock Pistorius’s iPhone, which was found on the floor of the bathroom in which Reeva Steenkamp, Pistorius’s girlfriend, was shot on Valentine’s Day.

Lieutenant-General Vineshkumar Moonoo, chief investigating officer in the murder case, had reportedly said he and his team could not gain access to the messages sent and received on the phone on the evening of the shooting.

“Pistorius said he could not remember the code. This information could be essential and Apple in the U.S. has agreed to make their technicians available to help us. I cannot say if Pistorius’s loss of memory is suspect, but the phone was clearly used the night of the incident,” Moonoo said.

State prosecutor Advocate Gerrie Nel said in a statement that it is essential to investigate the cellphones.

Steenkamp’s cellphone and iPad, along with two other cellphones, were also found at the scene.

Pistorius will appear in court again on August 19.
