Oscar’s family shares the pain

2014-03-05 00:00

CARL Pistorius, the older brother of Oscar Pistorius, in a private moment, when he thought no media was watching, spontaneously gave June Steenkamp a hug.

Steenkamp, the mother of Reeva, was waiting for a bus after the court had been adjourned yesterday.

Carl and his two aunts, Sonja and Loïs Pistorius, were also waiting outside the court for Oscar to leave the court through a sea of photographers.

Steenkamp saw Carl and his two aunts and asked one of her companions whether they were Oscar’s family.

Then Oscar’s aunt Sonja made eye contact with Steenkamp and gave her arm a light tap.

Loïs also gave Steenkamp’s hands, folded across her stomach, a pat.

Then Carl and Steenkamp made eye contact and Carl put his arms around her and pressed his cheek to hers. For a moment they stood like that, without saying anything.

A friend of the Steenkamps said in reaction: “June really appreciated the small gesture of compassion and said she felt really sorry for the Pistorius [family]. Not one of them had pulled the trigger and each one close to Oscar is going through a traumatic time. June carries no hate in her heart for the Pistorius family or for Oscar. She just wants to know the truth, she wants to know what happened.”

The first day of the trial was very difficult for Steenkamp, said the friend.

“She often cried. It is unpleasant for a mother to hear such things.”

Steenkamp landed at O.R. Tambo airport on Sunday and returned to Port Elizabeth yesterday.

It had reportedly been her plan to only spend a day at the trial, but her plans may change as the trial proceeds.

Yesterday, on day two of the trial, Oscar was visibly more tired and emotional than on the first day.

He often rubbed both hands over his face and sometimes rested his head in his hands.

When the court adjourned for lunch, Oscar walked to Carl and the two brothers hugged each other a long time while Oscar talked softly to Carl.

Their uncle, Arnold, the family patriarch, and their younger sister, Aimée, were again in court.

They sat with other family on the bench right behind Oscar.
