Oscar’s tip: Don’t stand back for anyone

2011-11-25 00:00

Sprinter Oscar Pistorius with Kitso Mokolometsa (4) at his house in Pretoria yesterday. Like Pistorius, the Potchefstroom boy also had both legs amputated before the age of one because he was born without shin bones.

He and his parents visited the ‘Blade Runner’ yesterday to get inspiration and advice about coping with prosthetic limbs. The little boy, who recently got a new set of limbs, but still prefers to get about on his stumps, listened shyly as Pistorius told him he got his first prostheses at the age of 13 months and started to walk at 19 months.

Pistorius told his parents, Paul and Ontatile, who are both nurses, that prosthetic limbs can make a child feel as if he is walking on stilts, but it is important for muscle development to use them as much as possible. He invited the family to call him for advice any time.

‘The sooner Kitso learns he is a normal child who doesn’t have to stand back for anyone, the better,’ he said.
