YESTERDAY’S mass arrests of police officers is the biggest in South Africa, according to experts.

It superseded last year’ arrests of 15 Crime Intelligence and Tactical Response Team officers in Pinetown and Inanda for the vicious assault of Nhlanhla Luthuli in Hammarsdale. They are still on trial.

In 1990 and 1991 seven police officers led by Captain Brian Victor Mitchell were arrested following the Trust Feeds massacre of 1988.

Mitchell received 11 death sentences, commuted to 30 years, while his co-accused received 15 years each. Later Mitchell received amnesty from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

In 1996 former Vlakplaas security police base commander Dirk Coetzee, former askaris Almond Nofomela and David Tshilalanga and former Natal security policemen Andy Taylor and Johannes van der Hoven were arrested in connection with the 1981 murder of Durban lawyer and ANC activist Griffiths Mxenge. Coetzee, Nofomela and Tshilalanga were found guilty but granted amnesty. the other two were found not guilty.

In 2009, 11 policemen from Mountain Rise station were redeployed after allegations of manipulating crime statistics. Among them were station commander Harriram Badul and three officers who were arrested in connection with the disappearance of government property.

Badul’s case is still pending.
