Out-of-control truck leaves behind trail of destruction

AN out-of-control truck laid waste to cars in the intersection of Higginson Highway and Milky Way in Mariannhill, leaving 10 people injured on Saturday.

Among them was a woman who was walking across the road when she was hit by the fast-moving truck — she is fighting for her life.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said that paramedics arrived to find four wrecked cars scattered in the junction.

“Paramedics from ER24 and other services that arrived on the scene found vehicles scattered across the road. Upon their assessment they found a pedestrian lying several metres away from the wrecked vehicles. She was in a critical condition and suffered a traumatic amputation of her left leg during the collision,” he said.

“Seven people were found in the vehicles with various injuries ranging from lacerations to possible neck and back injuries. Paramedics treated three children, aged between two and 14 years old, in one of the vehicles for moderate injuries.”

Vermaak said that the truck driver was trapped in the mangled wreckage and had to be cut free by rescue technicians using hydraulic tools. “The driver of the truck had to be freed by the jaws-of-life. The local fire and rescue services had to perform this task before paramedics could treat him for his injuries. His passenger was able to climb out the vehicle before paramedics arrived on the scene.

“The passenger of the truck explained to paramedics that they apparently experienced a mechanical failure prior to the collision. However, the exact cause of the collision remains a subject of police investigation,” Vermaak added.
