Out of gas? Try stew or hubby to keep warm

2011-07-07 00:00

WITH limited gas supplies and plunging night temperatures, locals have to get clever about how they stay warm.

Yesterday The Witness reported on the liquid petroleum gas (LPG) shortage in South Africa. A number of refineries throughout the country have been doing scheduled annual maintenance and others have needed unexpected repairs.

For example, the refinery south of Durban is under scheduled maintenance this week.

Due to the upkeep issues and increased demand for gas, many local suppliers have either run out of supplies or will do so soon.

The SA Petroleum Industry Association’s executive director, Avhapfani Tshifularo, said current demand is too great for local production. However, he added that all of the country’s refineries are producing.

Two main suppliers, Easigas and Afrox, decided to import gas, but have to wait until later in July to receive any.

The Witness asked some locals on Facebook and Twitter how they planned to deal with the chill. Jennifer Williams Adkins King said the remedy for her was “sum leka stews and soups” with hot drinks in between.

Others said lots of blankets and hot water bottles, while Dale Stadler added “brandy and company” to the list.

Less likely to win agreement was Cliffy Anderson’s suggestion to “run on the spot”.

Kim Glanister Coetzer said she will “jump in bed” next to her husband, who is by far the “best heating system around”.
