Outrage at murder of another farmer

2009-04-28 00:00

The farming community is outraged over the murder of Eastern Cape farmer Sigidi Samson Mbadu.

“We are incensed by the barbaric and careless act,” said Kenny Biggs, chairman of the Cedarville and District Farmers’ Association. “He was not a member of our organisation, but he was still a part of the farming community.”

On Monday, The Witness reported that Mbadu was stabbed by two men at his home on Saturday evening. The suspects, both 29 years of age, fled in his car and overturned the vehicle a short distance from his farm.

The accident left one of the suspects in a critical condition. He was transferred to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, while the other was discharged into police custody early the next day.

It was not possible to ascertain the injuries of the hospitalised man yesterday.

The KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union, Kwanalu, expressed its concern over the ease with which another farmer has been murdered.

“The country cannot afford the loss of our food producers in these most difficult economic times,” said Kwanalu spokesman, Koos Marais. “It has been the declared policy of our government to give urgent attention to the high crime rate. Kwanalu thus calls on the government to attend to crime in a meaningful way and to protect all our people.”

He added that the organisation expects a speedy trial with a just sentence.

Mbadu’s son, Msikelelwa, said the family was hard hit by the murder. “My mother is devastated,” he said. “Members from the church have come to see her. We are waiting for the postmortem to be done so that we can bury him.”

In related news, Swartberg tractor garage owner Malcolm Ingles, was attacked on his premises on Friday.

According to a police report, Ingles was at work when his house alarm went off at around 9 am. On inspection, he allegedly found a former gardener (22) and an 11-year-old child on his premises. The report said that the two attacked him — without any weapons.

The 22-year-old man appeared in the Kokstad Magistrates Court yesterday on charges of assault and housebreaking. Police are still looking for the 11-year-old.
