Outrage over ‘Andrew Zondoville’

2008-08-11 00:00

A CALL by the ANC Youth League to rename the town of Amanzimtoti after bomber Andrew Zondo has been met with outrage from opposition parties and residents.

Apparently not satisfied with the decision to change Kingsway to Andrew Zondo Drive, ANCYL is now pushing to rename the entire seaside town after Zondo.

Many residents feel that the renaming is unnecessary and will destroy the spirit of ubuntu in the community.

Zondo, an ANC activist, planted a bomb in the the Sanlam Centre in December 1985.

The teenager was sentenced to death in September 1986 for the deaths of five people, three of whom were children. Last month, a local primary school in iLovu was named after Zondo.

ANCYL provincial chairman Mxolisi Kaunda said they made their request so it can be considered as part of the eThekwini renaming process.

He said ANCYL will consult provincial leaders and the municipality before making further comments to the media.

“We also want to consult with the community over this decision. We will make a public statement once we have met with the leadership,” he said.

DA eThekwini caucus leader John Steenhuisen described the move to rename the town as “ridiculous” as it already has a Zulu name.

“It’s not as if the town is a bastion of colonialism … This move is driven by a totally different perspective,” he said.

Resident Judy Khumalo said the renaming idea is absurd and unnecessary.

“The name is just fine. Why do they want to continue with this? It will just bring heartache to those who lost their loved ones in the bombing,” she said.
