Outrunning the competition

2008-10-21 00:00

Mr Price’s Nkosi Ntantiso used his strength to out-run the competition over the tough hilly Chatsworth Half Marathon course, which had returned to its traditional Chatsworth Stadium venue after the withdrawal of last year’s sponsors.

Despite near perfect running conditions, Ntantiso’s time of 68 minutes and 57 seconds is more a reflection of the stiffness of the course than his running ability, but even then he was over two minutes and 600 metres free of his nearest challenger and clubmate Lingile Gonga, who had a stride-for-stride battle with Boxer’s Elmore Sibanda to sort out the remaining podium places.

Boxer’s Iris Ndlovu and Bongile Mpanza were never far away from each other as they ran through the hilly suburb course. Ndlovu was able to hold a 15-metre advantage at the line, which she crossed in 94 minutes and 41 seconds, while Mr Price’s Nomusa Ntsetse finished third over 700 metres adrift.

Although Boxer’s Shingie Badza had the winning of the BHP Billington 15 km, it was host club Canon Richards Bay who dominated the results of the traditional event, which attracted new sponsorship this year.

Badza had over a 500-metre lead when he beat Muhle Mkhwanazi to the line on Saturday afternoon to record a time of 48 minutes and 10 seconds. Mkhwanazi had the consolation of leading the host club to a team win.

The Richards Bay women were even more prolific with Simone Scrase not only taking the overall win, but also the 35-39 age group and the lead role in the team prize. Petro Nel was the second team member winning the 40-49 category and making the top five with her 73-minute finish.
