Over 300 struck off Abaqulusi voters’ roll

2013-11-18 00:00

MORE than 300 people have been removed from the voters’ roll in the Abaqulusi Municipality after it was found that they did not reside in Ward 22.

This comes after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) conducted a second investigation into allegations of registration of voters who did not reside there.

An initial IEC investigation found 1 525 voters were not residing in the ward. The IEC report said 762 voters were considered in the second investigation that was undertaken in September by a team of electoral project co-ordinators.

It said of the 762 targeted voters, 151 were found to be residing at the addresses they had furnished to the electoral body.

It was also found that 337 did not reside in Ward 22, and that the forms of 28 voters could not be located in the local IEC offices.

The IEC said those found not to be residing in the ward were given seven days to make representations before they were removed from the voters’ roll.

The 337 voters who did not make their representation were removed from ward 22 voters’ roll and moved back to their original voting stations.

Six people, who made representations, were retained on the voters’ roll, along with the 28 others whose voter registration forms could not be found.

The investigation came after the Electoral Court ordered the IEC to probe registration of voters after former ANC councillor André Lotter lodged an application to interdict a by-election in April, alleging people who resided outside the ward were allowed to register there.
