Over 50 hurt as tent blown down

2008-11-07 00:00

More than 50 people were injured, eight seriously, when strong winds blew down a marquee at an event organised by the KZN Agriculture Department in Eshowe yesterday.

According to eyewitnesses, there were more than 3 000 people in the marquee, and Agriculture MEC Mtholephi Mthimkhulu had just finished addressing the audience about an animal feed project to assist families affected by the runaway fires that destroyed grazing lands in the northern part of the province.

Suddenly, a gust of wind lifted the marquee. Flying poles hit people, but more were hurt as they were trampled in the stampede to get out.

Mthimkhulu, who was on the stage and was not hurt, sent his condolences and offered prayers for the families of the injured. He noted that it was ironical that the wind that had fanned the disastrous fires was now affecting the same people.

He thanked his staff, the emergency services, the police and health workers for working tirelessly to assist the injured and preventing more people from getting hurt.
