THIRTY-THREE people were involved in two accidents yesterday morning when the bakkies they were travelling in overturned.

Eight of the injured were schoolchildren.

A bakkie carrying 25 people overturned on the R56 just outside Kokstad after mechanical problems caused the driver to lose control. It is believed the driver fled the scene.

Derrick Banks of ER24 said the emergency personnel were shocked to find that the bakkie was carrying 25 people.

“Four people were treated for serious injuries and another four were treated for minor to moderate injuries.” Paramedics were surprised that nobody else was injured.

On the Table Mountain road in Woodlands, eight schoolchildren were injured when the bakkie they were travelling in overturned.

Banks said four children had suffered possible neck and back injuries, while four others were treated for minor to moderate injuries.
