Owner escapes as car catches fire

THEMBA Magwaza lost his means of earning an income when his work car caught fire yesterday afternoon.

Magwaza, who works as an estate agent for Remax in central Pietermaritzburg, said he was about to take clients to another office when his vehicle caught fire.

“Just after I started it I heard cracking fireworks and saw a big fire under the bonnet. We got out of the car and luckily no one was injured,” he said.

He said his colleagues, together with nearby neighbours, tried to put out the fire with extinguishers as they waited for firefighters to come.

But it was too late, as the front part of the car was already extensively damaged.

“I suspect there was an electrical fault. My belongings, including a cellphone and camera, were burnt. I used to call this car my baby because I have had it for a long time.”

His colleagues said he can no longer perform his duties as an estate agent. “We all feel so sorry for him,” said one of them who asked not to be named.
