Oz clash: Bok vets drafted

2014-09-04 00:00

THE Springboks have banked on experience for their Rugby Championship third clash against Australia.

For wing Bryan Habana, the Test marks his 100th Bok cap, as the fourth South African player to reach a century of Tests. Fellow battle-hardened Bok Victor Matfield, with over 50 Tests also takes up his starting position after an injury-enforced absence.

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer has made six premeditated changes to the side that snatched a last-gasp 33-31 victory over Argentina two weeks ago — four forwards and two in the backline.

“It was always a plan to use the first two games to get going. There are guys that haven’t played and [plenty] that played a lot of rugby. We gave a few guys an opportunity in the first two games to find continuity and now I want to go with experience.”

Beast Mtawarira and Adriaan Strauss start for the front row alongside Jannie du Plessis, while Bismarck du Plessis catches a breather as covering hooker from the bench.

Matfield joins Eben Etzebeth in a more familiar lock pairing while Marcel Coetzee was rewarded with a blindside flank starting berth after a great performance off the bench.

Meyer opted for the methodical Morné Steyn at flyhalf and Jan Serfontein replaces Damian de Allende at outside centre. Serfontein, more suited to inside centre, forms a formidable midfield duo with Captain Jean de Villiers.

“They are the best two centres,” Meyer said.
