PMB Collegians in do-or-die derby against Impi

2013-05-31 00:00

THERE is nothing quite like a Maritzburg Collegians/Maritzburg Varsity derby to stir up the passions of club rugby followers in the KZN capital.

The same can be expected at 8 pm today when the UKZN Impi tackle PMB Collegians on campus in a Fidelity Security Moor Cup Premier Division crunch encounter at the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road.

Collegians old boys and Varsity alumni are sure to turn up in their numbers to join the families and diehard supporters of the club game in what is expected to be a muscle-up tie. UKZN Impi number eight and captain Andre Greyvenstein is no stranger to these no-holds-barred affairs and he knows the battle up front will be crucial to supplying front-foot ball to his backs.

Impi won the first-round clash at Woodburn in which their centres, wingers and fullback were a constant threat, while it was a more even contest up front, but it was so early in the season that there is little to learn from that result now.

What is real is that the Impi have lost four matches in a row — against the top four sides — while Collegians have yet to win a match and are perilously close to the bottom of the eight-team log. Impi ran Varsity College close in the 20-13 defeat in Durban last time out while they lost — rather than Crusaders won — that particular fixture at the Durban North club, so it’s not all bad news.

Collegians, too, can reflect ruefully on two matches that got away. A fortnight ago a chronic lack of self-belief allowed Harlequins to somehow come back from a 19-7 deficit in the last quarter to draw that bruising match at Woodburn, while last Friday there was another win that got away when they were edged 9-7 by bottom club Zululand Rhinos in Empangeni.

So everything points to two sides that are desperate to win the derby.
