PMB Varsity sinks Pinetown 4-0

THE only KZN Men’s Super League club hockey match in the capital city on Sunday saw log leaders Maritzburg Varsity beat Pinetown 4-0 at the AB Jackson GreenFields Turf.

Down in Durban, reigning champions Tech Rovers beat PMB Collegians 8-2 at Queensmead.

Pinetown have had a good season and Varsity were just a goal up at half-time through Daniel Deane after a penalty corner had been awarded. Pinetown suffered something of a meltdown at the beginning of the last quarter when trailing 3-0, after a Matthew Boote goal following a penalty corner and Deane’s second from field play.

Straight after that third goal, KZN Raiders forward Shaun Baker and Cameron Leaver were sent to the sin- bin within a minute of each other as they incurred the displeasure of umpires Gary Carson and Llew Soine.

Thus it was no surprise that Varsity added their fourth via the stick of the talented Kyle Nipper, playing against only nine men.

PMB Collegians were staring down the barrel against Tech when trailing by four goals with the second half still to come, but they did well to concede only two more after the break. Both Collegians’ goals came via the penalty corner route and off the sticks of Michael Craig and Simon Johnson.

Mike Botha and Tim Drummond bagged a brace apiece for Tech, with four others making up the eight-goal tally.
