PMB Varsity take on SA club champions

2011-04-15 00:00

THE first round of the Fidelity Moor Cup Premier Division takes place tomorrow afternoon and Maritzburg Varsity has the top fixture when the campus side meet KZN and SA club champions College Rovers at 3.30 pm in the Peter Booysen Sports Park, off Golf Road in Scottsville.

The nucleus of the PMB Varsity side has been through an intense Varsity Shield campaign and the experience garnered in that competition will stand them in good stead for what promises to be a competitive Premier Division season.

And in Rovers they have the perfect fixture to gauge where they stand in the premier KZN club rugby competition at this early stage of the season.

This PMB Varsity squad has never been better prepared at the start of the domestic provincial season and they are sure to give the hot favourites from Durban a game to remember tomorrow.

This match has great historical significance, as it marks PMB Varsity’s participation in the senior KZN leagues for the 100th consecutive season.

Their first year in the senior league was in 1912.

With the Sharks’ Super Rugby and Vodacom Cup teams not playing tomorrow, Rovers are expected to be at full strength.

The seconds kick off at 2 pm in what should be another interesting fixture.

As part of the Varsity Rugby Centenary celebrations, the KZN Rugby Union has invited UKZN to play a representative match against the Natal Duikers’ provincial youth selection at King’s Park on Easter Saturday.

The match against the Duikers kicks off at 2.40 pm and will be followed by a presentation by the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union before the Sharks versus Hurricanes match at 5 pm.

In other Premier Division action on Saturday, Harlequins tackle Old Boys, Jaguars face Durban Collegians and the North Coast Rhinos meet Crusaders.

In KZN First Division South action, two matches to look out for are log leaders PMB Collegians away at Kokstad and The PMB Elephants’ trip to Hillcrest.
